Artist Statement:
Artist Statement

In history, our society has
assigned us gender specific
roles presented through agents
of socialization, including
our families, peers, religion,
the media, language,
educational practices, and
economic and governmental
foundations. Both consciously
and unconsciously we are
affected and molded by these
institutions. Through the
creative process I am able to
challenge these roles with my
own symbolic imagery.

Mimicking the influence of our
social institutions, I create
my imagery both consciously
and subconsciously. I
obsessively find images
everywhere: in the shapes
created by the interaction of
forms, in shadows, in the
reflections of light on
surfaces and objects. I draw
inspiration from images of my
early childhood, when pink
rabbits and teddy bears
dominated my world. Combining
the appropriated shapes and
images of my subconscious with
the ideas and characters I
have consciously created
allows me to build a symbolic
visual vocabulary.

The materials I use directly
relate to the domestic sphere
allocated to women. I use
acrylic paint as it is often
considered a lesser household
paint associated with
women’s crafts. I employ
the use of needlework as it is
a family tradition passed on
to me as a young girl. I
create images on fabrics, ...
