Artist Statement for Elizabeth Griffiths

As a child, I first painted on the backs of blue prints my father brought home from work. My pictures gravitated then, as always, to the natural world, often animals or mountains. I continue to have a great interest and concern for the natural world. My images are all of places that I have visited in British Columbia. I have spent time in these spectacular landscapes and then later have recalled or recaptured them in paint. Although my intention when painting is not to accurately portray a specific place but to express a moment in the life of the spirit - those ineffable moments we yearn for but which slip by just out of grasp, not quite understood - I do also capture the essence of these natural spaces. Many people have recognized the locations even from the small details of the scenes that I have painted. Perhaps there is a kinship created in the souls of those affected by the beauty of a specific place.
I think creativity is the underpinning of natural order; the desire of things to come into being. It is natural in the human spirit to create, in this we are linked to the living world, the creative urge in all living things. The miniatures I create are meant to be vignettes out of time, mere 'details' of a much larger scene. I strive to catch those feelings of perfection when total unity of place and time and mood is possible even for an instant and hold those moments, expressed through an image of the fleeting subtleties of the natural world.
My paintings, I hope, also express my love of nature, the beauty of colour and the harmonizing effects of light. As Kenneth Clark has written, “Facts become art though love, which unifies them and lifts them to a higher plane of reality; and, in landscape, this all embracing love is expressed by light.” Through harmony in light and joy in colour I would like the viewer to feel the energy and balance of nature while viewing my works. I hope that my images strike a cord, or revive a sense of connection; the wonder that we still can feel in creation. Each person may filter my images through their own experiences, finding in themselves individual responses and thus become participants in the creation of meaning.
