Artist Statement for Leonora Egutkina

My work is an ongoing experiment with color, shape and texture.I approach each peace with an open mind, not expecting any predetermined outcome. Within each work, no matter how abstract, I search for harmony in what may appear disorderly or indefinable. I let my guard down and my mind wonder spontaneous and free, exposing me to the unexpected.

I am compelled by ancient art, modern music and dance. It inspires me; it gives me the spark that ignites my creativity. The artists that influenced my artistic vision the most are Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler, Richard Diebenkorn, Cy Twombly and Willem de Kooning.

In an effort to explore a visual language, my paintings communicate an emotion behind an experience. My work suggests the somewhat transient yet permanent nature of memories, the tangible and the ephemeral, glimpses of the future evolving with experiences of the past.

I let the brush dictate the direction, which allows the subconscious to speak on it’s own terms. I allow layers of thoughts and feelings to move at their own tempo. In this sense, like in dance, I strive for rhythm, one that pulses and breathes in each work, keeping it alive, vibrant and fresh. My life experiences, thoughts and emotions shape my paintings, but I leave the freedom to interpret my work up to the viewer.
