Artist Statement for Ellen Haffar

Artist’s Statement
Ellen Haffar

My artwork has always been a visual response to place. My surroundings dictate both the subject and appearance of the work. When I was working out of the Delevan Center, on the near West Side of Syracuse, New York, I found elements such as worn bricks and pigeons diving from rooftops entered the paintings. Since moving out to the hills of Pompey NY., I have found my subjects in the gardens and landscapes that surround me. Forays into the Adirondack Mountains of New York state and the Shores of Cape Cod in Massachusetts have further influenced the scope and appearance of my work.
An interest in the extraordinary found within ordinary settings and subjects has been a constant for me. The changes in a creek or sky that reflect the steady advance of seasons as a physical manifestation of time… the movement of a black dog through an opening in a hedgerow. The way unremarkable members of a simple garden reveal truly important aspects of life.
My paintings are the result of sitting and looking, quietly but intensely, at a subject. When this is done, surroundings reveal themselves and humble elements take on greater brilliance and complexity.
