Artist Statement:
I like to experiment with different techniques. The images that I choose to paint will dictate the technique that I use. For instance, certain scenes cry out for the pallette knife while others want only dabs with the brush and yet others decide they would like to be glazed. Sometimes I feel as if the paintings paint themselves. Other times I paint out of frustration. The Tiki People started out that way, but it actually turned into something I liked. The colors please me and the people in the ocean just seem to sit there and are a part of this alien landscape. This scene actually came to me on a weekend out at Waikiki. We were sitting on the beach and watching the sunset. The light was bouncing off the ocean and there were people just standing in the water or sitting in it and not swimming or doing anything. It just looked very strange.
I always start my paintings with an underpainting or at least a stain so that the white of the canvas is gone. I think that white disturbs our color sense. Colors do not look right if a painting is started on a white canvas. ...
