Artist Statement:
I am a sculptor and
installation artist working in
a variety of media such as
rubber, metal, wax, and wool.
While I have always been
interested in materials and
process, conceptually I am
interested in contemporary
society's obsessions and what
factors and/or situation drive
them. The "valve venus"
sculpture came out of my
wanting to explore body image
and what makes something or
someone feminine and
seductive, yet also dangerous.
It is also meant to be
slighlty humorous with the
use of valves and the human
desire to be pumped up (either
through lip injections or
lifting weights, etc.).The
work that I have created out
of used bicycle inner tubes is
constructed through the
repetitive act of cutting,
twisting, and coiling, along
with the obsessive
accumulation of parts and
forms. This series is ongoing,
and I am currently working on
combining the tubes with
sheets of slit black rubber.
Through this series I am
exploring the themes of
transformation, mutation, and
growth, as well as the ideas
of recycling and rejection.
