Artist Statement for Elizabeth Gaye Macdonald
Elizabeth received her B.F.A. in 2000 at the University of Windsor, where she majored in Photography and minored in painting, and printmaking using intaglio and relief methods.
In 2009 Elizabeth returned to her love of water colour Plein Air painting, when a long time friend returned to Ontario. Together they began the "Windsor & Essex County Plein Air Society." The group meets once a week during warmer weather at different predetermined locations. Elizabeth loves the peaceful experience of painting out of doors. Painting from nature rejuvenates the spirit, and soothes the soul.
Elizabeth's large scale figurative watercolors are quietly sensual. Using the figure as her base, she abstracts the human form with colour. Flooding her paper with vivid pools of watercolor the paint flows where it will. The paintings take a long time because each pool of paint must be allowed to dry, this process takes tremendous patience.
Her narrative photographic tribute to her father in the book "Don't Grow Old," shows her deep compassion for the elderly. To view this book go to her web page link at the bottom of this portfolio.
Elizabeth also finds the process of working an intaglio plate to be challenging, yet rewarding. Elizabeth belongs to, and works for Windsor Printmakers' Forum in an administrative capacity.
