Artist Statement:
1 Breath Time is for me a way of life.
Standing in front of canvas, I take a last breath and engage myself completely, sometimes until losing consciousness. For me it is a ritual of survival, which expresses the horrific pace in which we lead ourselves to oblivion.
In mid 2001 Emilio survived an assassination attempt in his studio due to his environmental activities. Shot from point blank range, his right and dominant arm was ripped off at his shoulder. Dedicated doctors worked for days to stabilize his condition. Unfortunately, due to the extensive damage suffered by his nerves (the bullet could not have done a "better" job), he remains paralyzed in his right arm but has learned to paint with his left.
From 1999 until the birth of "1 Breath Time" Emilio Mogilner initiated dozens of artistic activities, from direct actions to social-environmental festivals, in order to raise awareness to issues of social-environmental problems in the national media.
Now all his activities are 1 Breath Time related, except for a huge 14 meters high, 180 tons sculpture he will create with a local Bedouin tribe, three months from now in front of one of the most polluted ...
