Artist Statement for Emily Miller

Visit www.kauaiwatercolors.com for a full portfolio.

Beginning her career as an artist in Los Angeles, California, Emily continues her love for painting on Kauai. The island's delicate mixes of color and tone make watercolors the first choice of Miller, also an accomplished artist in other media, from photography to glass and metal sculpture. Watercolor has always been a favorite of the artist - its abilities for free flow as well as precise control make it an ideal medium for many subjects.

Emily's subject matter ranges from tropical landscapes and seascapes to botanicals, portraits and fantasy. The juxtaposition of nature and machine has always fascinated her. Here on Kauai where the jungle quickly reclaims any neglected areas, the possibilities are endless.

Miller is also intrigued by the beauty in later stages of life: aging, rusting, drying out or even rotting - the splendor of such objects is often overlooked in a culture more focused on the beauty of youth.

Emily Miller actively explores other applications of art and design. She works as a web and graphic designer at DataSpace Industries in Lihue, and is President of Kauai Recycling for the Arts, an educational nonprofit organization offering classes in melting down recycled glass and transforming it into artwork. Her exploration of other forms of art is detailed at www.beware-the-emily.com.

Emily Miller's original watercolors are on exhibit at Aloha-n-Paradise Gallery in Waimea, Bamboo Gallery at Na 'Aina Kai Botanical Gardens in Kilauea, and Amy-Lauren’s Gallery in Hanapepe. The artist is available for commission work.
