Artist Statement for Engelina Zandstra

I work very hard, I move in the direction of an art of the thought that chooses reality as a starting-point, never as final destination (Joan Miró)
LANDSCAPES OF THE MIND by Engelina Zandstra, a Dutch artist living in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
During many years I have been following courses in Amsterdam in the field of painting, etching, silk-screen painting and modelling.
During the last years I have concentrated myself on painting.
My work balances between abstraction and figuration. My art images are created in my head and in my mind. The impressions that are stored in my head during my life are the source of my imagination. Sometimes I find inspiration in ordinary objective coincidence.
The idea is worked out directly on the canvas, without any prior study.
Each painting is as a link in my creative development, a frontier process of my personal style. In this way my style development occurs fast. Colour, composition, figuration and abstraction are not constant components in my work, but subject to my spiritual exploration trips.
My fascination with images that are not possible or are no true representations of reality, has linkages with the idiom of the art of Surrealism.
In Surrealism forms and colors can have different meanings. The viewer is thus forced to give attention to the different meanings of each color and each shape.
My artistic intuition, starting with images of the mind, uses shapes, forms, and colours and combines these aspects to a painting with my own special 'handwriting'.
The style of my paintings can best be described as lyrical-abstract. Sometimes the beginning is abstract, and then at some point human figures are
coming into shape. As if the human presence then is necessary for further inspiration, defining human relationships.
Usually I work in many thin layers on top of each other. Each new layer gives inspiration for the following one, with new ideas.
Because of the different layers and colours, the acrylic paint gets depth and character.
Colour is very important for me : the alchemy of colour. This defines for me the atmosphere of a painting.
I call my paintings 'Landscapes of the Mind', because they are reproductions of the images that are stored in my imagination.
As for the meaning of them : I consider my paintings being like music, they don't need words for explanation.
Each one tells his own tale, that may be different for each person looking at them.
'In the labyrinth of my thoughts there are many ways leading to the unknown'
