Artist Statement for Eric Wickenheiser

I have two distinct bodies of sculptural work: Mixed media sculptures that explore socio environmental issues and figurative ceramic pieces that explore how emotions transform over time.

In my mixed media work, the forms, placement, and surfaces of the materials are altered to convey symbolic meanings. It’s the metaphorical relationships suggested by the interplay of the materials that interests me. Anther way of thinking about it is to see the materials as like the words in a poem. Each word has a unique meaning, but its meaning can be altered by how it is used or its relation to other words.

In my figurative ceramic pieces I look at different emotional issues people confront throughout their lives such as loss and regret or devotion and hope. I use clay for figurative work because of its durability and history. My intent is that each figurative piece will become a sort of intimate repository or touchstone that will survive generations; and become a relic or artifact.

My two dimensional portrait works are studies of people’s psychological state as a result of their emotional and social worries. I lean toward using oil pastels, graphite pencils and the dry point etching technique.
