Artist Statement for Christine Sargent

These paintings are an attempt at expressing love. Sometimes love is a whisper, a gentle touch, a prayer. Sometimes it's an explosion of emotion, a burning passion, a blossoming flower. It is the most complex and mysterious part of life. I yearn to know more of it, and to share what little I do know.
I use bright colors and layers of paint as an expression of what overflows from my heart. The images and ideas on the canvas are the things I see, but more than anything, feel in my spirit.
I use contrasting layers of thick and thin paint, opaque and transparent, warm and cool, dark and light. Often I will use figures, or images, to express a feeling or experience. White-dotted lines turn and move throughout most paintings, often connecting parts, or leading the eye.
I use a variety of surfaces including the standard canvas on which to paint. Most commonly, I have been painting handbags, to be used as a traveling piece of art. I hope to share these expressions with many people by having the art go out all over the world and into the everyday - the bakery, school, church, home; as well as the less common - the Grand Canyon, a cafe in Paris. These paintings could end up anywhere. My hope is to share them.
