Artist Statement for Evie Tirado
evie tirado is one of the relatively few american artists working primarily with traditional batik techniques.
She was born in New York City and received her B.A. from Richmond College where she studied art and psychology.
In 1978 evie tirado discovered batiks from Sri Lanka and Africa. Fascinated by the tiny veins of color ( called "crackle") characteristic of much batik work, she exchanged her paint brush for a tjanting...the traditional Javanese tool for drawing with molten wax. She has spent nearly the last two decades mastering her craft.
She says, "to me,creativity is an expression of love....a love of being. i love doing what I do and I hope others will experience some of that joy viewing my work".
evie tirado has attempted a fusion of modern art and traditional textile design. She enjoys working both in figurative and abstracted images. These days her work includes painting, watercolor, scratchboard, mixed media collage, as well as batik and painted silk. She remains most intriqued by the challenge of finding new applications for this ancient media.
