Artist Statement:
I would like to introduce my artistic thought through the words of an Italian Art Critic
“Astegno, a Magic Realism that Americans really like” by Giovanna Grossato article on Il Giornale di Vicenza , Sunday 4 July 2004
It does exist deep inside many of us another Ego, of eternal youth and purity; it represents all we could and always wished to be.
This Ego we miss and contemplate with tormenting desire is the poetic core of a young artist from Vicenza who is now becoming successfull in the United States. It is in fact in a prestigious gallery of St Louis, the “Third Floor gallery on Washington”, that are currently being exposed some works of Evelyn Astegno, together with other emerging artists such as Craig Downs, Julie Malone and Christopher Gustave.
The group of paintings Evelyn Astegno chose to display in the collective Art Show are extremely representative of her style, soon well defined from the beginning and matured since she started her career. They belong to a disquieting Surrealism where characters, probable but not assimilable to any type completely rooted in reality, represent probably different aspects of the same subject: the artist herself. Her painting is a thought translated ...

| Your Personal Biography |
My name is Evelyn Astegno.
I was born in Vicenza, Italy, on 9th January 1971. I’m an emerging artist fully-grown up through classic studies and I graduated from the University of Venice with a master degree in Architecture.
Nevertheless painting, in every aspect, has always been the core of my interests, as the main way to express myself and the sense and aim in life. So, during the years, I have been cultivating and developing it (from the portraits to the reproductions of famous works on different materials with different techniques) in a parallel course as regards the one of my education.
That’s why my work combines elements of various kinds and sources (literary, philosophical and architectural, besides to pictorial) into living, sometimes contrasting, compositions. In fact I like to put also impressions and memories of my life into my paintings, referred to nice and bad personal experiences, and to the adventurous, vivid and educational trips all over Europe I used to make with my family when I was a child.
After graduating, I took some lessons from the great illustrator Giorgio Scarato. Before moving to the U.S.A. I had been working for a local firm that sells Venetian masks internationally. I’ve always made my varied range of works for fun and personal wideming or on request.
I took part in some collective art exhibitions in the small town where I used to live, Creazzo, and in San Bonifacio, in the provinces of Verona. I had my first one-man show in the space of V&V Projects, in Vicenza, in the summer of 2000, and I exhibited my works in a personal show in Sandrigo, near Vicenza, too, in 2003. I was among the finalists in Premio Arte 2001, an important art show in Milan and was published in Arte, a respected art magazine.
I’ve been the artist in residence at the 3rd Floor Gallery, in St Louis, for 4 years since 2004 and I've been curating the gallery for 1 year in 2007. I also participated to other exhibitions in St Louis.
