Artist Statement:
At Heather and Fred Studios we
design and build fine artistic
furniture in a contemporary
style. Fine craftsmanship and
an attention to detail set our
pieces apart from the
mass-produced world of today's
furniture. We work with solid
hardwoods, veneer core plywood
and natural wood veneers.
Every step is done as 'green'
as possible. Our pieces are
built one at a time, in the
studio tradition, and
constructed to last a
lifetime. We carefully use
proportion to create a sense
of balance and flow between
the natural characteristics of
the wood and the human
tendency toward flat panels
and straight lines. The use of
inlays and the inclusion of
other materials such as cast
glass and metal adds a level
of detail beyond the wood
itself. In these ways, we
strive to explore the play
between the organic and
synthetic, both in material
and design. Fine joinery that
appears simple, but is
mechanically complex, allows
our pieces to look like they
“grew” that way.

Biggest Artistic Inspiration The natural beauty and character of wood plays a very important part in our designs. This natural element is often explored in ways that contrast the organic and synthetic elements of our environment. Often the straight lines and edges of the materials contrasts with the natural grain, colors and variations of the woods we work with. The inclusion of other materials such as cast glass, aluminum and acrylic help define this play between the man-made and natural worlds.

Why Did You Become An Artist not provided

Your Personal Biography Heather O'Flaherty and Fred Taylor have been building fine furniture in the Phoenix area for over 7 years. After graduating from Clemson University in 1999 with degrees in Ceramics and Special Education, we moved to the Phoenix area to open our studio and start building furniture. Growing up in an antique furniture restoration shop gave Fred extensive experience in the world of furniture early on. In the past seven years we have built our reputation on beautiful design and the highest quality workmanship. Each piece we create begins with a series of sketches and conceptual drawings that eventually get translated into a perspective drawing to bring out the dimensions and proportions. Usually a scale model is then created to help us better realize the materials and textures used, and check the accuracy of the proportion. A successful piece finally emerges from the building phase and begins to enhance the lives and environment of the world it meets.
