"IN CENTRO PROPUESTA, THE PRESENCE OF AN ABSENT ONE, FELIX BERROA"

"Felix Berroa is a serious,unquiet and hard-working. he has been like that since his beginnings. He has never satified with the first studies nor his first success. He has gone deeper into the stamp techniques, having a sense of investigation and in the same way has happened with his work of painter.
The wish for learning, knowing, and experiencing has taken him to New York and Long Island, that;s why we mention the "absent" artist. There his life and work have always challenged difficulties with courage and results -art shows and awards-. In addition to this he is one of the fewest Dominican artist to have had the "honor" of being criticized by the New York Times, very favorable for sure. Despite the distance, he does not lose contact with Santo Domingo, he sends new of his and photos.
Now there is the opportunity to see a generous sequence of his recent works. He individually exhibit in Centro de Arte Propuesta. He present paintings though simultaneously with the set of colors it is sensed the graphic creator, a skillful in graphic and drawing, with even highlights his abstracionism! We need...a "Artist's Book". We will not forget that outstanding participation at the National Biennial of 1981, a work from a graphic virtuoso man..."
Felix Berroa is in our fine arts an artist who possess his own unmistakable seal through the years. He can modify the color, the base, the composition. Pierrot's faces remain, sad until they are smile. Faces that border the self-portrait. Faces with big eyes, interrogative and introspective ones. If we will look for a reseblance would be the characters's cousins of Master Candido Bido, also filled with an inner llok and nostalgic stillness-possessed. Internationally speaking, would be the Bolivian Graciela Rodo Boulanger's misterious children's.
The title of this show is significant: "Body and Thought's Ecstasy". Felix Berroa's metalanguage has always ranged between the physic and psychis, between inocence and mischievousness, between the erotic and espiritual. His main characters, seemingly mediative and far away, are able to convey behavior, experiencies, constant emotions. sometimes in the same work, face conveys a state of being, but the body (or part of the body) another one, just as it happens in the present show for several works which become in an "Internal Diptych", apart from the truly polyptych ones.
Felix Berroa paints, places, spaces, gets together and move his characters choreography-like. Moreover, we do not stop seeing them like puppets -the physiognomy helps- that the "meneur de jeu" or director manipulates by means of invisible threads, then he stops and set them like in a show or ballet final position two-dimensined on the canvas...
One of the greatest modern french painters, Gerald Garouste, said that graphic has a great vocabulary richness and its "writing imposes very sophisticated rules in its blak and white limit". No doubt we might apply this observation to the Dominican artist, who through his paint allows the graphic man to be seen, somethimes in the austerity of black and white,thus achieving his best results. Indeed in works structurally less complex, more sober chromactically seaking, Felix Berroa is able to get a legible pictorical and coherent expression, even overwhelming. Like many artists, he has to brake enthusiasm, the multiplicator elements dynamism.
What we particularly minde was Felix Berroa's revelation as an abstract painter. We placed hein within the category somewhat magic fantastic, but we now discovered an abstract painter, with lot of strenght in color and in the space construction rhythmically animated. The abstract-figurative vertical diptych is one of the most attractive works of his presentation. We would love to enjoy a Felix Berroa's entirely abstract exhibition! We hoppe he do not let us waiting to long for his next exhibition, be abstract, figurative or mixed."

“Felix Berroa is a young artist from the Dominican Republic who lives here now. He studies at the University of the Dominican Republic and the National School of Fine Arts in Puerto Rico. He is also a poet of modern life. His brilliantly colored acrylics on canvas, such as “Equilibrio de Caprichos”, show an assured technique, combined with good ideas. "BEYOND THE CONVENTIONAL"

“The figures populating the fantasy worlds of Felix Berroa are also generic in nature. His cast of characters includes puppets, dancers and clowns engaged in intrincate tableaux based on themes of entrapment and longing por release. Hanging together for protection, they yearn for transcendence but often appear incapable of achieving it.
The Idea of escape to a simpler, purer state of being is expressed in “Rutura del Silencio”, with its three-parts composicion showing urban man longing for rebirth, dreaming of humanking in an embryonic state from which it emerges toward an Adam and Eve couple who stand on a threshold, presumably of paradise. Brilliant color and stylizrd form are Mr. Berroa’s idiom, and if his symbolism is not the most original, the emotional intensity of his paintings carries it above the commoplace. "DIVERSE VIEW OF HOSPANIC ETHNICITY"

The alienating effect of cultural displacement is a recurrieng theme in Felix Berroa’s works on paper. His puppet-like characters, their heads askew, inhabit a fantasy world of anonymous urban spaces haunted by technology. The airplane is both a vehicle of escape and an imprisoning capsule that traps them in suspended animation. In a pair of large drawings entitled "Personality", Mr. Berroa's characters find release by assuming the atributes of animals like the eagle, wolf and horse.
