All my images are born accidentally. I tack my studio dropcloths onto the wall once they’ve become sufficiently splattered with paint, and search the surface for suggestions. I’ll discover an image within a tangle of marks, and paint to free it, an archaeologist unearthing...

Stephen Fessler's Premiere Artist Portfolio
Welcome to Stephen Fessler's Portfolio. My work proceeds along two parallel paths, differing greatly, yet related through their obsessive concerns: with detail, on the one hand, and the desire to include everything, on the other. The realist work, the Directed Perception path, expresses my love for beautiful dilapidation, the canvases cut to the shapes of the rusted, worn objects I like so much, painted with loving attention to their surfaces. The other path I've called Visionism, discovering the images of these populous paintings within random marks and stains, as you might find horses and palaces in the clouds. ... |
