Artist Statement for Flora Baumann

I entered the art world late but not without passion, dedication and persistence. I love outdoor painting and am 'out there' at least once a week. However, I have discovered that there are other paintings that call to me which cannot be done out-of-doors.
In the 1980’s I began watercolor with Marianne Brown. I joined California Watercolor Association in 1989, eventually attaining signature membership in 1996. In time I became more interested in more abstract acrylic works and collage, loosely based on landscape. In 2003 I began studying plein-air oil painting with Pam Glover. I found I loved this medium and painting outside. I try to paint scenes which might disappear through development or decrepitude to preserve the essence of what existed or scenes which inspire me through light, mood, or sheer beauty.
Pam Glover and Robert Chapla and Jerrold Turner have had great influence on my painting. I have taken other oil painting classes and workshops with George Holmes, Tom Hughes, Randall Stauss, Greg Kondos, Nikki Basch-Davis, and Van Waldron.
Recently I have been stunned and captivated by the stark, beautiful landscapes of two painters: Gerhard Richter and April Gornik in their paintings informed by the Northern Romantic Tradition as outlined by Robert Rosenblum. I look at the paintings by Wade Hoefer and think they too are of this tradition as well as. These artists enrich my life and expand my possibilities.
