Artist Statement:
HOLGA STATEMENT
Photographer Jonathan Bailey
first introduced me to the
Holga Toy Camera in 1996.
The simplicity of the camera
captured my attention - a
plastic body, lens and
viewfinder and a spring-loaded
shutter right out of a
100-year-old Kodak Brownie Box
Camera...and a host of flaws!
It was the images which really
captured me. They held a
vintage appeal, a romantic
look of a photographic time
past.
Ten years later, Holga is the
only photography I do outside
my professional work (which is
now all digital). As the body
of work begins to grow, I am
thrilled to see that "the
Decisive Moment" - as put
forth by Henri Cartier-Bresson
- is still the most important
part of my images.
Recent accomplishments with my
Holga include:

- Acceptance in the DIA
Invitational, a juried
exhibition hosted by the
Center for Fine Art

2007 - "Colorado Photographers" Juried Exhibition:
A series of Matt's Holga To Camera images are selected for the Colorado Photographers Exhibition. The juried show selected a group of images illustrating children. One of the six images was selected as the Visitor's Favorite
"Interactions" Juried Show
Matt's image, Israeli Soldiers, has been selected in the Juried Show, INTERACTIONS, which will hang at the Center for Fine Art Photography from May 4th through May 31st, 2007. 850 images from 244 photographers were entered in this Juried Show.
"DIA Invitational" International Exhibition
Matt's Holga Toy Camera image, The Mountain Guide, has been selected in the Juried Show, DIA Invitational, which will hang at Denver International Airport from May 25th through August 6th, 2007. Matt is one of 148 photographers from eight countries selected for the show.
International Black & White Spider Awards nominates two Holga Toy Camera Images
Matt's Holga Toy Camera images, The Mountain Guide and Three Boys at the Circus, have been nominated in this international competition by the Black & White Spider Awards. This prestigious competition plays host to thousands of entries from 60 countries. Circus was nominated in the People Category and Guide in the Advertising Category
Working with Artists chooses Holga Toy Camera Image and Israel image for show
Working With Artists has chosen two of Matt's images in its Juried Show, ALTERNATIVES, which will hang in their Denver Flash gallery. "Las Trampas Church" a Holga image captured during his New Mexico trip last fall and "Wailing Wall" captured during his time in Israel were selected. Wailing Wall is reproduced as a Polaroid Image Transfer.
ARTS ALIVE GALLERY
Matt's Holga Toy Camera images are currently for sale in the Arts Alive Gallery in Breckenridge, CO. The gallery is a co-op for members of the Summit County Arts Council.
JURIED MIZEL MUSEUM SHOW
Four images from Israel were part of the Juried Show "Togetherness" hosted by the Mizel Museum in Denver, CO. The images were captured during Matt's time as a photojournalist there.

Three winter-themed Holga Toy Camera images in Juried show through Arts Alive and Summit County Arts Council.
HOLGA SHOW IN SUMMIT COUNTY

FUJIFILM Nomination
Matt's bridal portrait of Kandace Whitley (Anich) is chosen by FUJI Film for it's Best of Weddings 2005 Competition. Another portrait from this series won a Third Place for Best Bridal Portrait in WPJA's Annual Best of Weddings Competition.

Three of Matt's wedding images are nominated for the EventPix.com/WPPI Best of Weddings 2005 Competition. The three images are in the Humor Category.
Wedding images win in National Competition
WPJA Competion for Best Images of 2003 and 2004. First, third and fourth places in Best Engagement and Best Bridal Portrait categories.
