Artist Statement:
I regard myself as part of the English landscape tradition but with a questioning edge. I have long been interested in how our ways of seeing the world (especially the countryside) have been influenced by the cultural inheritance handed down to us by eighteenth century artists, writers, travellers and landscape gardeners. My interest in the collective memory of a supposed Arcadian Golden Age led me to explore this notion in a number of ways. I have also been intrigued by the relationship between our presumed direct experience of the landscape and the ways in which it has already been 'framed' for us by others.
After I gave up teaching in 1995 I was able to concentrate more fully on my painting and long distance walking; in 1997 my wife and I backpacked 1200 miles from Land's End to John o'Groats. Our joint love of the countryside (Sheila writes walking books) led us to move to the Yorkshire Dales National Park in 1999. My recent work has become more concerned with the nature of my personal encounters with the drama of the Three Peaks country and its unpredictable changes of mood.
