Artist Statement for Joy Day

Joy Day is a professional artist specializing in landscape, portraiture, astronomy and fantasy painting. She is represented in collections, galleries, and museums internationally and her work has been published on CD-ROMS, music CDs, prints, bookmarks, notecards, posters and brochures.

Joy has a fine arts degree from Purdue University but she is entirely self-taught in the art of reverse painting on glass.

"My glass technique produces vibrant, brilliant eye-catching works by the Dangerously Delicate art of painting directly onto the underside of a sheet of glass, instead of onto the front of paper or canvas. Multiple layers of glass are sometimes used to achieve added depth, gold leaf for iridescence and vibrancy and esoteric materials for texture and translucence. Shards of glass, razor blades, ice picks and scalpels transform otherwise flat colors into intriguing texture and detail. Portions of paintings are even set on fire, producing dramatic results - and a great whooshing sound! Although I also paint the traditional way, in acrylics or watercolors on canvas, board or paper, I prefer the crisp, clean brilliance that comes through painting on glass."

The technique I use is Reverse Painting on Glass. I had seen reverse painting while I was growing up and was captivated by its depth and radiance. When I finally started painting, I decided to teach myself to reverse paint on glass instead of learning to paint the "normal" way. Although I can also paint the traditional way, in acrylics or watercolors on canvas or board, I prefer the crisp, clean brilliance that comes from painting on glass.

I have been working with glass for over ten years, with artworks in collections worldwide. My paintings can be translucent, similar to stained glass, but with much more detail and with more flexibility in the subject matter. My work can also be totally opaque, framed to hang on your wall.

You are welcome to visit my website, www.glassnebula.com, to see what can be possible on a sheet of clear glass.

Recently I have expanded into sculptural glass, combining painting with blown, carved, molded and etched glass to produce unique sculptural installations.

I am also available to take new commissions. Just contact me through absolutearts.com or glassnebula.com.
