Gale Gibbs, Artist Statement


Main Entry: short story
Function: noun
: an invented prose narrative
shorter than a novel usually
dealing with a few characters
and aiming at unity of effect
and often concentrating on the
creation of mood rather than
plot


My work in the last few years
has developed from what I saw
as contemporary cave painting
to the telling of tales or
short stories, which by
definition, offers me some
opportunity to create a story
which may or may not have a
plot but rather asks the
viewer to participate and
finish the story that I have
begun. These tales or short
stories are often times
developed one image and one
line of text at a time and
then began to make a story,
sometimes truth, sometimes
fiction and sometimes a little
mix of both.

Collage and photography are
the images that I am most
developing at this time. I
begin with a collage and then
photograph it and then paint
the photo. This process is
time consuming but the
finished product combines all
the elements of drawing,
painting, computer, and
photography in a cohesive page
that the viewer enters. The
