Artist Statement:
Oscar Wilde once said, ‘We are
all in the gutter, but some of
us are looking at the stars.’
I can relate to that feeling
of awe at the beauty of the
stars, a realm out of reach
and a mystery to us mortals
caught up in our earthly
tribulations. I'm searching
for the same light and spirit
in my paintings. To borrow a
phrase, it sounds like the
"audacity of hope" to even
attempt to create art when so
many masters have gone before
and done it brilliantly. From
the luminous portraits of
Rembrandt to Rothko's massive
paintings which appear to be
alive and breathing, they and
countless other artists have
captured a certain glow or
spirit. I'm striving for the
same thing in my paintings.
I'll be satisfied when I can
touch the stars with my brush
like they did. Until then,
I'll keep painting. You can
