Artist Statement for Guillermo Matta

Beginning in the 1950's and influenced by Abstract Expressionism especially Mark Rothko, Vasily Kandinsky, Klee, and Roberto Matta, I paint expressive color abtract geometric forms between the stasis and motion, the architectural and the hard-edge.
My favorite working materials are colored engineering drawings sometimes glued onto canvas. The rhythms of the geometry create a mood to generate small elements that I contour, isolating them with specific color. Though small, these elements are very important for the entire composition. This affiliation with the past, avant-garde trends such as the cubism and constructivism movements were reflected in the 1970's. My new mixed media pieces have evolved toward the development and abstraction supported by the horizontal and vertical forms of Kandinski, Kupka, and Modrian. The forms are the influences to express my own sensibility and to see myself painting on the edge of the new technology.
Many people asked if they can see my art anywhere in a gallery? Not at this time. I have been represented in gallerites in different countries, but for various reasons, these alliances ended adn I have made no effort to cultivate new ones. I like the personal contact with people who really like my work.
Many other ask me my relation with Robert Sebastian Matta Echaurren. We, the Matta's are the descendents of Europeans who settled in Chile in the late 1760's. Some are scholars, artists, writers, engineers, architects, and revolutionaries. Each generation emerged, supporting their own values without forgetting their roots.
