Browse Greene's body of work: There's an enormous gap in the history of art - from the Greco-Roman classic period to the turn of the twentieth century, corresponding with the attempt to utilize visual art as a sort of slow photography, an instrument of science with which to illuminate the structures of the natural world. To me, art is magic - not science, not political comment, not an attention-grabbing device. It was born in dark caverns, of night-lit fires, to the sound of subterranean water - and for me its essence will always remain there.
