Artist Statement for Jason E Fetvedt

There are two projects that I am currently working on: Words and Faces.

Words is an exploration of the meaning of everyday symbols and the reality we as individuals carry around in our heads. I have always beeen fascinated by words as symbols. Particularly interesting to me is the fact that any information or connotation assigned to a word is provided by the person viewing the symbol and not by the symbol itself. Even those words thought to be so offensive that to speak them aloud is anathema contain no inherent evil, yet cause an internal reaction so vile that each generation makes a point of teaching the proceeding generation their meaning just so the newer generation will be compelled NOT to utter them. They must, for the vitriol of the symbol can be passed on in no other way. The reverse is true, as well. Often what we have been taught is the meaning of a word, what we picture in our heads as we write or speak it, has little to do with the reality to which we refer. Words is an attempt to explore not only the imagined meaning of words but, also, the way in which words are used to pervert our understanding of reality.
