Artist George Scott
A New Voice from the ‘Greatest Generation’
George Scott is a prominent Connecticut artist and an active member of the Salmagundi Club of New York City.
A native New Yorker, he still feels a deep attachment to that city and its way of looking at life. For it was the brilliance and brutality of New York in the 1930’s that shaped the man and the artist. New York was teeming with the best in art, music, theatre, talent and style. The realities of the Great Depression were grim. But out of that era, and his Queens and Bronx neighborhoods, emerged people like June Allyson, Tony Bennett, Tony Curtis, Regina Resnick, Gary Marshall, Hank Greenberg, and scores of others.
In 1942, George Scott was awarded the prestigious New York City Augustus Saint-Gaudens medal for Excellence in Art and, in the same year, won acceptance to Cooper Union Institute where he was to study under such luminaries as Max Weber , John Godanz, Max Wilkes, Rafael Soyer and Max Berndt. He remembers Max Wilkes, in particular, as taking a strong interest in his work and encouraging him to pursue a career in fine art.
