Gerald Hartwig's quest is to visualize the WOMAN of the 3RD millenium. What is the mystery of a woman to man, what are the multiple facettes she lives? She is a Saint and a Sinner- at times clear and present , at times almost vanishing into the background.
Who are the faces of the new woman?
As a visual artist I can only offer a glimpse of something that eludes clear definition or description. Rather than me being the motivator of the image, the motif beckons me to be discovered and I become its translator. What moves me, moves through me and ends up on a surface, a framework of sorts.
As a creator I often feel like a mapmaker, an illustrator of spirit and feelings. My subjects are never predetermined, they reveal themselves through silent observation and emotional experience.
I enter a dialog with Self, with feelings, with sexuality, with women and events that shape my existence.
I aim to clarify and bring to light the healing essence cloaked in the chaos of our world. ...

ART STEIN COLLECTIONS:
For Immediate Release: GERALD HARTWIG
There is still hope for the end to the intellectualization, the artificial removal of emotional interaction between art and spectator. The relentless effort to shy away from anything resembling feeling,
communication and yes, figure has been death to real progress in art. I am not referring to the return of realistic depiction or ghastly decorative kitsch that passes as art as a trendsetter for museum collections to be. I am talking about a new and deeper connection to those elements in life that shape our existence. A connection, a communication of ancient wisdom and contemporary expression. Painting
feelings and figures is starting to loose the stigma of re-active critic’s demonizing.
I have been very fortunate to discover a new exciting voice in the young painter Gerald Hartwig. Raw feeling, passion and constant interplay of sensuality and aggression best describes what transpires when looking at Hartwig’s work.
Hartwig is presently exhibited at Half a Dozen Rose Gallery that runs through April 2002 (see attached
article) where he revealed his theme and inspiration to me in a conversation during the opening.
“ I paint only when I reach a heightened state of arousal. The brush or my hand or whatever tool speaks to me, becomes an extension of an erection. The process of creation is an act of lovemaking . Communication between the sexes and in general has so much confusion, because we base our dialog on the brittle voice of reason, not on the power of intuition. I owe it to myself and the audience to explore this confusion, maybe clarify it...”
Usually painting on hard surfaces, resistant material that can withstand the attack of the painter’s passion, Hartwig decided to venture to the softer side for his next show, entitled K.I.S.S.
“I was drawn to the femininity of raw belgian cotton and linen. It almost feels like I can undress and caress the body that lies hidden in the fabric. It takes my breath away to just run my fingers over the fiber.”
For the upcoming show Hartwig purposely chose a non gallery setting with artist’s Manager Keiko Watanabe. The bare brick walls of and ambience of a jazz club speaks to the the simplicity and
sensuality of this exciting new artist’s work.
The new show K.I.S.S. will open April 24th at ROCCO, accompanied by a live performance of
percussionist Dan Morris.
