STATEMENT
I have been working on my radical approach to art since the Seventies. I am interested in developing a formalised meditative technique where the role of the artist is merely as an experimental vehicle. I formed a number of pioneering art organisations in the Eighties and Nineties although during most of my career I have preferred to work in isolation.
MEDITATIVE PROCESS ART:
A pictorial style which merges painting with mathematics, musical forms or concepts borrowed from other time based media to create sequential and developmental formats. Images are elaborated (or processed) across the picture plane to produce complex interacting webs or mats. I have recently began a long series of smaller works which simplify and reduce in scale this procedure.
MEDITATIVE LANDSCAPES:
A reinvention of The English Landscape Tradition using formalised structures and multiple series of condensed images to present a many layered and multifaceted portrayal of the natural world.
PROCESS ART PORTRAITS:
My attempt to create a new portrait painting tradition. Aspects of the sitters’ character are presented in the form of words, numbers and various kinds of symbol which are then examined and extended within carefully defined structures.
ORIGINAL IONIST ART/ADVANCED ART RESEARCH:
The deliberate combination of multidisciplinary concepts to create dynamic pictorial formats which continually generate and develop new ideas or images.
Much of my early work utilised mathematical and scientific formula to provide structures or templates which would automatically develop the thematic material. I am now concerned with refining and more strictly applying this concept using traditional and new media.
I have been exhibiting my work widely since 1986 and have pictures in many public and private collections. I am happy to work to commission and will consider any type of project.
OTHER INFORMATION:
I founded IONIST ART GROUP for artists and scientists in 1987 to facilitate the exchange of information, initiate collaborative projects and present science based art. I edited and published the ION EXCHANGE between 1988-1992. I also ran a London based PROCESS ART GROUP for like minded artists at the same time.
I founded ARTISTS FOR ANIMALS/ARTISTS FOR CHARITY in 1992 to campaign and raise funds for animal charities by organising exhibitions and arts events of all kinds.
I have organised very many group exhibitions under the name MODERN WILTSHIRE ARTISTS (or MODERN ARTISTS) since 1994 to promote modern art in my local area.
Qualifications:
I am an elected Fellow of the Free Painters & Sculptors and an elected member of Marlborough Artists (now resigned).
