| Your Personal Biography |
My formal education is as a biologist, with an emphasis in evolutionary ecology. One of my most vivid life experiences was learning at age 12 that the atoms within our bodies have been recycled for eons from stardust, dinosaurs, everything, and will continue to do so for untold time after we die. I was drawn to science, especially evolutionary biology, out of a deep sense of kinship and respect for all the life with which we share our planet—especially life that is tiny, slow, slimy, or strange. A strong connection with my Jewish heritage also speaks to my sense of a sacred Earth, or “admat kodesh,” meaning holy ground in Hebrew. My artwork emerges from these experiences and feelings.
I came to collage via a variety of media, enjoying each, but not feeling perfectly at home with any. My mother, Lola Gertz, is a collage artist and my late father, Gedaliah Gertz, worked in collage as well. So, I suppose artistically I have come 'home' to collage in many ways. The textures, colors, and depths offer much to explore.
I live in Middletown, Ohio with my husband Tom Runyan and have two children in college, Laura and William. All of them make artwork. |
