Artist Statement:
"When I was very young, I suffered from depression and discovered that drawing provided a means to escape what was too painful for me to experience or to understand. I found I could immerse myself in the possibilities and visions which unfolded before me as I let myself draw the imaginary and the unseen. Through the years, I have maintained that exploratory attitude, each piece a passage or the suggestion of something just beyond the line of sight. I was taught techniques in drawing and painting by my uncle, an artist who was trained at Cooper Union. In my teen age years, I was greatly influenced and impressed by the Abstract Expressionists of the 60’s. I lived in New York City and was exposed first hand to the works of Rothko, Kline, Klee, Munch, Miro, Calder, Kandinsky, de Kooning, as well as the work of the Pop artists and artists of the streets and subways. I studied the masters, gaining the inspiration and courage from their work and their example to chart my own course -- always seeking a new way to manipulate the reality of what I saw -- experimenting with shape and color and composition as well as mediums...
