Artist Statement:
My mentor, internationally
reknowned painter Alberto
Mijangos, used to say little
things to help me understand
what the experience of
painting is all about. "Do
not paint like me. Go into the
dark room and find the magic
apple;" or "first you begin by
making your bed, or sweeping
the floor. do it with the
greatest tenderness and care,
as if you were creating a
masterpiece. that is how you
begin to learn to paint."
i wanted to paint abstracts,
but when i found the "magic
apple" in the darkness of my
soul, i began to see
faces-older people, members of
my family, images from the
past, and i knew i had to
bring them to light on the
canvas - to allow others to
move back in time with me, to
feel that they could reach out
and touch the face of someone
who has been through it all.
they could be your
grandmother, your mother, the
piano man in the dimly lit
cafe playing softly as you sit
alone at a table.
i wanted impressionistic, but
i surrendered to the painting
and it became figurative with
meticulous details in the face
and other areas while the
insignificant areas ...
