Artist Statement:
For a long time I have used the imagery of Venice and the Italian landscape in my paintings. The layered work in oil is abstract yet retains the essence of the images which inspired them. Architectural elements such as grids, gates, hearts and passages symbolize the passing of time, changes in direction, barriers to communication, lost love. These fragments of buildings can also be seen to represent home or a longing for stability, a struggle against the transient nature of life and relationships. My most recent paintings were inspired by the broken pieces of ceramic tiles in the Serpentine bench in Guell Park, Barcelona, designed by the architect Gaudi. I love color and texture and I am always exploring how color and line come together to form the structure of a painting. ...

Artist Reviews:
Pierre-Auguste Renoir once stated, “The work of art must seize upon you, wrap you up in itself and carry you away . It is the means by which the artist conveys his passion.” Few artists imbue their paintings with as much passion as Andrea Goldsmith. She has reinvigorated the modern ...

There is something soothing about Planes and Patterns. Perhaps it is the unpretentiousness of the work. There is little energy spent on representation. At first glance the interaction with the work might be purely sensual. But Marcie's work deals with short term memory, and the recording and experiencing of single moments. Jaclyn is dealing with the fragility of the urban environment in competition with natural forces. Tina's work is inspired by the infinite and Pascal. Andrea's work is inspired by very real places and experiences in Italy and Barcelona. It is quite enjoyable to walk through this exhibition and bathe in the patterns and colors. But there is a depth to this work that demands that the viewer look further, to engage each of the pieces and begin a dialogue with the artists.
