Artist Statement:
My work is influenced by diverse Cuban and American cultural references; from fashion magazines to billboard images, Latin Jazz riffs to Afro-Cuban rhythms, advertising symbols and elements experienced in daily life.
In my installations and paintings I create layer upon layer of images to express the world around me. A word or phrase from a piece of music, billboard images, and found objects contrast and complement each other in the same composition. I am interested in capturing these images with the same velocity and spontaneity as when I first encountered them. Elements and memories from my Cuban heritage are also woven throughout my work. Layers of images and colors are constructed in a stream-of-consciousness manner to reflect the diversity and speed of our daily experiences in an urban landscape. As one goes through the day one filters out many of these occurrences and associations. In my work I do not use this filter, I consider all the possibilities.
