Artist Statement for Gossia Zielaskowska

“An Allusive Abstraction”

Reality is never indifferent to me and my paintings. While painting, I refer to my physical environment. Each day and every event leaves an important memory which is often relevant enough to paint. While I paint I listen to the world around me; music, a human voice, sounds and noises in disarray, or even silence. These auditory elements become my inspiration. The colors and emotions found in my drawings and paintings are sometimes transparent and at other times, like impasto. Everything in each of my paintings depends on composition – a reality which lives its own life. In my definition abstract art refers to the inner reality, an invisible space. But my concept of abstract art includes allusions. So I add some allusions from reality to my paintings, and these are indispensable in my creating art. When I render allusions into that world of my composition the work becomes more intelligible. I often start my work without a fully prepared conception. I rarely create sketches as a preliminary step in my painting; for me, sketches are “finished works.” The main idea of the work is almost always being defined during the painting process. Typically, my impulse to create may be the result of some fascinating philosophical thought, a sudden spoken word, or a sound in the moment. I often paint with music in the background. The reality of the sound is creating a new picture, or a new thought, which “leads” my painting. The world of my art is the world of my life: my intimate surroundings, sounds, fragrances, and thoughts – everything which is my reality, both inner and outer, both abstract and concrete.
