Artist Statement for Marcia Freedman

My work uses nature as a vehicle to describe the human life cycle and references landscape as well.

It is an investigative process using organic form as a metaphor for internal landscapes and external perceptions. The paintings focus on psychological inwardness and relationships. Symbols are used as an alphabet to give shape to life situations.

Built of many layers, my work addresses color, light, texture and a tension between thickly encrusted and thinly painted surfaces.

Rooted in the tradition of the figure, the physicality of the paint joined with the symbols are a narrative or dialogue between self and materials revealing a personal history yet remain ambiguous and mysterious.

The resultant images are mostly abstract, but in fact, based on the constant inquiry into the reality of life experience.
