The world around me...I view most everything in my environment as a drawing or a painting. I am often inspired after visiting major art galleries. |

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
I became an artist by accident. I have a BS in Fine Arts, but my degree is actually in Occupational Therapy. I went to my community college a few years ago to learn computer skills and somehow ended up in a full time graphic arts program. I hated the computer part so dropped it and spent a few years auditing the fine arts part. There I fell in love with drawing and with COLOR. |

| Your Personal Biography |
JACKIE DODSON has been an artist in the Amarillo area for several years. This is a second career for her. In her previous life she received her BS in Fine Arts from the University of Kansas and was a practicing Occupational Therapist. After raising a family of four children, operating a popular children's clothing business, and becoming involved in disability issues, she decided to pursue a new career in graphic arts. Unfortunately (or fortunately)...she discovered to her dismay that it was hard to teach an old dog new tricks.....'It’s hard to do a good job graphically if you don't even know how to SAVE your work on a computer.' She took a sabbatical and concentrated on the FINE ARTS aspect of the program, discovering her love of drawing and painting in the process.
Color is an important part of her creating. She prefers to use pure colors and what she refers to as her 'dirty brush' technique. 'I have painted entire paintings with the same brush without washing it out'. A friend once told her....'I can't paint....but if I could...I would paint like you...because your paintings make me HAPPY!'
Dodson has studied with Victoria Taylor-Gore and William Burrell at Amarillo College. Growing up in Amarillo she also studied with Dord Fitz and Mary Townsend. She has had works chosen for the student/faculty show at Amarillo College and has won a number of awards in juried art shows. She has exhibited with the Amarillo College Art Club and had a one woman show at O.H.M.S. She was the 2002 invitation artist for the Amarillo Symphony Vintage Amarillo Wine Tasting. Dodson is currently working with her daughter... a young adult with Down syndrome... to develop HER painting skills.
Jackie was selected by the readers of the Amarillo Globe News as the BEST ARTIST 2007. You can vote for her again this year during the month of July at http://www.amarillo.com/bestofamarillo
by writing in JACKIE DODSON STUDIO 100.
