Artist Statement for Martha Greenwald

Martha Greenwald is a mixed media artist working in acrylic, textiles, and bas relief. Her work reflects the visual sensibilities of the Upper Mississippi River valley, and her subject matter ranges from landscapes to animal mythology, to abstract and figurative works addressing human consciousness.

"Does art really make the world a better place? I know it makes the world more bearable for the artist. The world right now is threatening to become unbearable for a lot of people. At times the world seems unbearably violent, unbearably fast, unbearably dry. Art, in contrast, liquifies life, liquifies the world."

Artist Martha Greenwald has always been interested in color, the imagination, and the secret lives of creatures, from the private dreams of the dragonfly to the nighttime journeys of the red fox. She is deeply interested in human connections to creatures as revealed through tribal stories, myth and fantasy. Thus the cave paintings of southern France and northern Spain, the aboriginal dreamtime images of Australia, the hybrid creature images of Hieronymous Bosch, ancient Egyptian reliefs and the visual poetry of Paul Klee all inform her colorful, unique approach to imagery. The vibrant transparent colors of silk initially lured Greenwald into art. As her aims for her work became more ambitious, she expanded into acrylics, collage and bas relief. She has done a series of grotesque paintings on bad habits, from which have flowed workshops, articles, and prints.

Greenwald studied art history in Madrid, Spain, received a Masters Degree from Hamline University, and pursued additional art studies through the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Split Rock Art program, and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. She is an imaginative, interdisciplinary artist with additional experience as a writer, illustrator, greeting card entrepreneur, writer, playwright, environmental researcher, community organizer, and workshop leader. She resides in southeastern Minnesota, and has exhibited in galleries through the Upper Midwest.
