Artist Statement for Greg Long

Artist's Statement.

"I am an Artist whose work is based on traditional values. I believe a Painting should be worked in view of the landscape or objects that are being explored by the Artist, in simple words “Painted from Life”. This work may be reworked or altered in the Studio later, but the underlying subject will be interpreted as seen by the Artist in its true form. This belief has the effect of altering the Artist’s subject matter through the year, creating a need to defer the landscape studies during the winter months and exploring subjects that can be imported into the studio, in effect still life. I seek colour in my subjects, exploring the relationship between the underlying hues and the form of landscape and delving into the variety of the seasons and light patterns of the day. This then follows through in my still life paintings, these however tend to drift further into the tonal aspects of colour theory due to the act of choosing subject matter that can be explored in this manner. This then creates variety in my work. Whether I am working at home or abroad I like to let the subjects dictate their treatment, allowing the painting to Develop out of the Landscape or objects rather than a “style” which moulds the subject to conformity. This is evident in the Individuality of each piece of work when finished, most noticeable when a large collection is shown together even though the series will be of similar subject matter."
