Artist Statement:
Still life painting, as a pictorial genre, has traditionally been considered a “minor” form of artistic expression and invention. Much of my paintings are simple, or as Norman Bryson writes, ‘it is a form of rhopography –‘from rhopos’, trivial objects, small wares, trifles…the depiction of those things which lack importance, the unassuming material base of life that ‘importance’ constantly overlooks”- the So what?
My work looks at the overlooked, from which the human figure has been banished, leaving objects that are usually assimilated to woman’s sexuality as seen in the home, a woman’s place filled with those familiar objects of desire.
