Artist Statement:
Siegfried Haberer was born in Oettingen, Germany, in 1934. In the 1950's he was a master pupil of Richard Seewald at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. His artistic oeuvre, documented in many individual and group exhibitions, includes works in graphics, paintings and print graphics. This portfolio provides a brief insight into Haberer's print graphic oeuvre, which for the most part was produced in the 1970's and 1980's and which comprises about one hundred sheets. Notes concerning the exhibited works:
The sheets of the series "Oiseaux. Paraphrases à Saint-John Perse" (1977) as shown here are not the only works in Haberer's printed graphic oeuvre, which arose from his involvement with literature; on the other hand, however, as a series they are very special. They interpret and redefine their literary inspiration, Saint-John Perse's prose poem "Oiseaux" ("Birds", 1963), rather than illustrate it. A particularly attractive feature is that this method of paraphrasing can also be attributed to the fact that the text itself relates to works in the graphic arts: the inspiration came from lithographic works of Georges ...
