Artist Statement for Scott Gordon
|
|
|
Scott Gordon is both visual artist and poet who expresses his vision through painting, printmaking, written word, and spoken word. He was raised on the waters in and around South Carolina…its lakes, rivers, creeks, and the ocean. He grew up fishing on the Newberry County portion of Lake Murray and canoeing the Saluda River. Currently, he surfs regularly at Hunting Island and sails in the Beaufort River. It is these experiences on the water and the animals that inhabit them which fuel the inspiration for his artwork. His artwork does not attempt to merely portray reality as it is. Rather it attempts to transcend these experiences and transform them into something symbolic. He also finds inspiration in his lifelong dedication to learning. Scott studied art, education, and religious studies at the University of South Carolina. He studied technology at Clemson University. Currently he is a teacher of art and technology at Beaufort High School. He lives in Beaufort with his wife Patience and new daughter Ella who also provides plenty of inspiration.
