Artist Statement:
William Melstrom uses bowls and platters as canvases to display his extraordinary glazes and surface effects. Currently, the artist is exploring the shimmering, mesmerizing qualities of crystalline glazes.
In 2005, William Melstrom was an invited artist to the first two international crystalline glaze exhibits in over ten years. The first, during April, took place at Espace Grandjean in Valluris, France. The second, during September, occurred at the Red Star Studios in Kansas City, Missouri.
In 1995, William Melstrom won First Place in the Tenth Annual San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts National Ceramics Competition. William earned a Fine Arts Degree with Highest Honors from The University of Texas at Austin in 1993, and a Ceramics Merit Scholarship in 1994.
Prior to becoming interested in clay, William majored in Architecture at Rice University in Houston, beginning in 1975. He has worked as a draftsman, served in the Asian Pacific with the US Navy, and bent pipe and pulled wired for twelve years as a Journeyman Union Electrician.
