Artist Statement for William Melstrom

William Melstrom uses bowls, platters, and vases as canvases to display his extraordinary glazes and surface effects. Currently, the artist is exploring the shimmering, mesmerizing qualities of crystalline glazes.

During 2008-9 William Melstrom was part of the group Invitational International Crystalline Glaze exhibition "Abenteuer Kristallglasur," which took place at the Villeroy & Boch Ceramic Museum, in Mettlach, Germany.

In 2007, William exhibited in "Krystallos 2007," an Invitational International Crystalline Glaze Exhibition at Bill Campbell's Stonewall Gallery, Cambridge Springs, PA.

In 2006, William Melstrom Participated in "New Crystalline Glazes," an Invitational International Crystalline Glaze Exhibition,at St. Joseph Gallery, The Netherlands.

In 2005, William was an invited artist to the first two international crystalline glaze exhibits in over ten years. The first, during April, took place at Espace Grandjean in Valluris, France. The second, during September, occurred at the Red Star Studios in Kansas City, Missouri.

In 1995, William Melstrom won First Place in the Tenth Annual San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts National Ceramics Competition. William earned a Fine Arts Degree with Highest Honors from The University of Texas at Austin in 1993, and a Ceramics Merit Scholarship in 1994.

Prior to becoming interested in clay, William majored in Architecture at Rice University in Houston, beginning in 1975. He has worked as a draftsman, served in the Asian Pacific with the US Navy, and bent pipe and pulled wired for twelve years as a Journeyman Union Electrician.
William Melstrom’s work is in permanent museum collections, and has been pictured in Ceramics Monthly. The Artist resides at his Austin studio/home with Bosco, his holstein-colored cat, and with Bunny, a Greyhound mix.

“The inherent challenges posed by creating crystalline glazes are what I find most alluring about them. It requires both an analytical mind and a preoccupation with experimentation to bend crystals to one’s will. Also required is the selective eye of the artist, the ability to recognize success and the intuition required to transform the successful into the sublime. I find beautiful crystalline glazes to be a stimulating to make as they are inspiring to behold.”
