Artist Statement for Marlene Healey
|
|
|
Marlene Healey was born in London, England. After a 3 year stay in Paris, France, she moved to the United States and spent 23 years in Phoenix, Arizona. She now resides in Seattle, Washington. She started drawing and experimenting with paints at the early age of five years. Since then she has achieved success in many different art forms including African dance, performance art, costume design, silk screening, etching, mono printing and mosaics, as well as bead work. With each new challenge she has tried to create something fresh and exciting. Whether bizarre or beautiful, her goal has always been to capture a harmonious balance between texture, color and design with a focal impact on all those who are exposed to her work.
Healey first studied art at Scottsdale and Mesa Community Colleges in Arizona as well as Arizona State University, where she was the recipient of the top award in the M.F.A. and B.F.A. competition. As her painting career unfolded, Healey has had the opportunity to master several different styles of painting including impressionism, surrealism and neoclassical. Her current work is a delicate balance of textural abstraction and figurative or realistic forms.
Healey's past experience in the field of fashion and costume design has helped heighten her sense of color, texture, and composition and has given her a strong foothold from which to launch her latest works to the public. These paintings literally command one's attention and draw the viewer in for a closer look As one moves around each piece, exciting color changes occur as a result of the levels of texture and layers of iridescence united with flashes of gold ink and leaf. This all takes place without disrupting the harmonious flow of the piece and at the same time enhances the richness and elegance of any given area.
