Artist Statement:
My work explores different aspects of the Egyptian culture and what it means for me to be an Egyptian woman living in the United States. Living abroad has allowed me to take the role of the outside observer and has opened my eyes to elements of my rich culture which I had previously overlooked or taken for granted.
The urge to portray the Egyptian culture from my viewpoint increases as the media conveys certain negative stereotypes of Arabs. Images reaching Americans are generally of a political nature; therefore, I want to arouse the viewer and further stimulate their interest in learning about my culture through aesthetics. Much too often, it seems that the Western world puts a negative connotation on cultural differences. As an artist, I see it as my role to point out the beauty in those differences. This problem of Middle Eastern culture being scrutinized against the backdrop of Western ideals is addressed in my body of work.
I have chosen to portray images that are personally important to me and with content that will illuminate, beyond the stereotypes, the diverse and complex face of Arab/Islamic culture. Bedouins are not typically considered by foreigners as part of ...
