Artist Statement for Heidi Mayfield

I am not always an abstract painter but my work is always an abstraction of what I experience. My painting is intuitive; the work reflects the relationship between life and self, expressing emotion and thought. The subject is just a vehicle through which i speak. I set line and mark against each other to create this language, full of tension, yet always graceful and fluid. My approach to applying color to the painting is somewhat automatist, that is i start to paint without a predetermined outcome to allow the expression of unconscious impulses. Only the mark has been decided upon previously. My layering of colors is as important as the imagery is self. My colors convey the mood and time, my marks speak the emotion. I work on paper, board and canvas using a rich combination of charcoal, pastel and encaustic wax. I invite you to view my work and appreciate all comments and emails.

Thank you, Heidi
