Artist Statement for Heidi Mayfield

I am a mixed media artist. I am always exploring new mediums and new ways to use and apply them. I am currently use encaustic wax as my main medium. Ever since I was a young child watching my artist mother paint with melted crayons and wax I have always been fascinated by wax. In my early artistic years I was seriously devoted to the art of Batik and wax resist. I combine the use of oil paints, oil sticks, acrylic, charcoal, pastel, wire and whatever else that lands in my path into my art. I would best describe myself as a process artist- meaning I am most inspired with the process of creating rather than the end result. I paint in the manner of acting and responding, often with only a vague minimal idea of my artistic destination. Why should I approach art any other way? If I did I would miss all the wonderful and inspiring side roads along the journey. And to me that is what my art is about....the journey.
Heidi
