Artist Statement for Helen Closs

|
The new paintings by Helen Closs are dynamic, colorful, expressionistic and always figurative in nature. If you look at them for a while, figures seem to emerge and some situation comes into view. There is usually strong emotional content as the paintings become more bold.
To make these paintings Closs uses alternating layers of pouring and brushwork. Color is built up this way to create a unique effect. New mediums are always sought out and experimented with.
Interestingly, these paintings like many other abstract paintings change with lighting and how you feel on a particular day. Figures can be seen in a completely different way, place etc., depending on the viewer.
