paintings feature surprising
shapes, jeweled surfaces, and

investigating the incongruous
harmonies of the American

large-scale canvases, “Ship of
Fools: Portrait of a
Confederate Navy,” captures
the surprising cruelty and
exhilarating beauty of
nineteenth century warfare

to submerged ironclad hulls,
detonated depth charges, and
