Artist Statement:
Nathaniel Hester’s (b. 1976; Durham, NC) abstract oil paintings feature surprising shapes, jeweled surfaces, and a luscious palette while investigating the incongruous harmonies of the American landscape. This most recent suite of one hundred large-scale canvases, “Ship of Fools: Portrait of a Confederate Navy,” captures the surprising cruelty and exhilarating beauty of nineteenth century warfare replete with formal references to submerged ironclad hulls, detonated depth charges, and sinking submarines.
